Red Stag

Red deer are majestic, adaptable ungulates native to Europe, parts of Asia, and North Africa. Males, called stags, grow impressive antlers each year and use them to spar for dominance during the autumn rut; females, called hinds, typically lack large antlers. Adults range widely in size depending on region and subspecies, from lighter, deer-like builds to robust, heavy-bodied animals. Their coat shifts seasonally—reddish-brown in summer and grayer in winter—providing camouflage across woodlands, moorlands, and mountainous terrain. Red deer are social: females and young form matriarchal herds, while older males may be solitary or gather in bachelor groups outside the breeding season. They are primarily grazers and browsers, feeding on grasses, shrubs, and young shoots, and can travel considerable distances to find food. During the rut, stags emit loud roars, display antler clashes, and establish harems of receptive hinds.

Key Facts

Male red deer typically weigh between 300 to 500 pounds (135–225 kg) and in some subspecies and prime individuals exceeding 600 pounds (270 kg). Hinds are significantly lighter, usually between 220 and 350 pounds (100–160 kg). Gestation for red deer lasts about 8 months, roughly 230 to 250 days, and calves are able to stand and nurse within minutes of birth—an essential survival trait in the wild. Females reach sexual maturity at around 1.5 to 2 years, while males generally begin breeding successfully from 3 to 4 years onward when they have developed the size and antler maturity to compete. In the wild, red deer commonly live 10–13 years, though individuals in protected or managed conditions can live into their mid-to-late teens.
