Blackbuck

The blackbuck is a striking antelope native to the Indian subcontinent, primarily found in India and parts of Nepal and Pakistan; males are known for their dark, almost black upper coats and long, spiraled horns, while females are lighter and hornless or have short horns. They inhabit open grasslands, scrublands, and lightly wooded areas, where their agility and speed help them evade predators. Historically widespread, blackbuck populations declined due to habitat loss and hunting, but conservation efforts and protected areas have helped stabilize and, in some regions, increase their numbers.

Key Facts

Male blackbuck antelopes typically weigh between 80 and 140 pounds, while females are smaller, usually 60 to 90 pounds. Gestation lasts about 6 months (around 180 days), and fawns can stand and nurse within minutes of birth; females reach sexual maturity at roughly 1 year, males at 2 to 3 years, and wild blackbucks commonly live 8–10 years, with some reaching up to 15 years in protected conditions.
